I have always been a big believer in doing things yourself. It is not just a matter of the money involved either. There is a sense of accomplishment that goes with knowing that you did it all yourself. When it came to installing new carpets, I was quite sure that I could do it myself. I didn't need to hire any carpet installers. DIY carpet installation would work as well for me as DIY cabinet installation had worked the year before. Boy was I in for a surprise! Installing carpets is harder than I had thought it would be.

The problem with carpet installation is that it is harder to cut and measure carpets than it should be. Working with wood is easy. It is solid, it is the same length at all times, and it never changes. It is easy to measure, easy to cut, and easy to install. Carpets, by contrast, are grouchy things. They can stretch, they can compress, and they can change. What carpet installation experts don't tell you is that you have to actually cut a little bit of extra carpet. It is a strange rule of carpet that no one seems to understand, but there is always less carpet than there should be.

Needless to say, the carpet installation was a nightmare. I could not get the cuts quite right, and when it was all done, it turned out that there was not enough carpet to reach the wall. I thought I would give it a second try, but I was worried that it would work no better. At any rate, I knew that by the time I got to stair carpet installation, I would be out of luck. Installing stair carpets looked to be beyond my skill level. I couldn't figure out how you would get it even, straight, or accurately measured. As it was, when I had first tried carpet installation in the living room, there was a big bubble in the middle of the floor and there was not enough to make it all the way to the wall. I knew that working with stairs would be a disaster.

I guess I learned my lesson with carpet installation. I still enjoy assembling things myself, but I think I am a little bit better at knowing when I am out of my league. Doing your own work only makes sense when you can actually do it. When you can't, you had better call the experts.
