5 Things You Must Know About Interior Designers

You know, it is really frustrating to work in interior design.  I can't even think how to start.  People have so many preconceived ideas about interior designers.  For example, the fact that I am a male who is not gay working in the field of interior decorating strikes people as a shocking revelation every time.  They cannot see how I even got into interior designing with my orientation shall he say.  And the fact that I'm laid-back, not fussy, and tolerant of design schemes that do not go with my own ideas strictly defies everyone's expectations.  They think that interior designers are all petty tyrants, obsessed with the idea of getting everything to look just the way they want to, and unwilling to compromise their vision even the tiniest bit.  I don't understand why people even hire interior designers with the things they think about us.  I mean, who would ever want to work with someone like that?

The fact of the matter is that many interior designers get into it because of how much they like working with other people.  When I went to interior design school, I admit that I initially had some pretty grand ideas of myself and my own vision for interior spaces and layouts.  I quickly got over these ideas, however, and realized how much there is to learn from other people.  The fact is that interior designers who can not get along with others and help other people to realize their own visions do not go far in this field.  Unless they are the most well-known interior designers, hailed as geniuses by celebrities obsessed with their own personal vanity, they'll have to figure out how to get along with people sooner or later, or face the fact that they suddenly have no clients. Interior design is, after all, not about creating the perfect space, but about making clients happy with where they live, where they work, and where they play.  Interior designers who do not understand this usually quickly learn, or else they burn out within the first year or two.

The fact is that most people have never worked with interior designers, so they do not understand what the experience is like.  If they did, they would find that interior designers are much like other people – calm, approachable, and easy to work with.  Really, the quality that distinguishes the best interior designers from all the rest, is their ability to make decorating fun.  Interior decorators who cannot do this end up with clients who feel like they have not gotten all that they wanted, no matter how nice the space looks.
