Introduction - This book is intended for everyone who is interested in saving either time or money, or both. The hundreds of time-saving short cuts and money-saving tips included in these pages will prove of value to the homeowner and the apartment dweller alike—and to the lady of the house as well as the man.

01. Use Of Tools - There is probably nothing that discourages a home handyman faster than being unable to find a specific tool quickly when it is needed. Some kind of wall rack or storage system should be set up for all tools as soon as possible. Arrange tools so that all screwdrivers are together, all pliers together, etc. If lack of space does not permit putting up a regular workshop wall rack, then buy or build a tool box with compartments for all items.

02. Handyman Techniques - To remove small patches of rust from polished metals and tools, try rubbing the rusty spot with a hard typewriter eraser. The fine grit content of these erasers will polish out the rust, but will not scratch or otherwise damage the metal finish.

03. Repairs + Improvements - Small cracks on outside siding or stucco often are not attended to because the homeowner mistakenly feels that these are not a serious threat to his house. However, they can permit surprisingly large amounts of moisture to enter. This causes eventual rotting of the inside timbers, and also attacks the siding from behind, where the wood is unprotected by paint. In stucco even more damage can result. The water freezes inside the crack in the winter and causes the crack to widen and the stucco to eventually buckle outward and fall loose. To prevent troubles of this kind before they reach serious proportions, always inspect the outside walls of your house at least twice a year.

04. Wood Finishing - When shopping for paint, always specify clearly the job for which it is intended. Indoor and outdoor paints both come in a great many different types, and many are formulated to handle only certain jobs and are to be used only over specific surfaces. Don't make the mistake of thinking that one paint can be used for everything. Ask questions of the dealer, or read the manufacturer's label and other literature carefully. This is the only way to make certain that the right material has been selected and that it will be properly used.

05. Plumbing + Electrical - When water, gas or other valves must be shut off quickly because of an emergency, confusion sometimes occurs because the homeowner is uncertain as to just which valve controls what. To eliminate this possibility, take time out to hang identifying tags on all shut-off valves throughout the house. For best results use different colored tags for water, gas, steam, etc.Washer Sizes

06. Housekeeping Hints - To prevent accidents and confusion when storms knock down power lines, it is wise to prepare for storm damage ahead of time by keeping emergency lights on hand. Locate a few miniature, inexpensive pocket flashlights in strategic spots around the home. Keep one near the fuse box, one near the cellar stairs, one near the furnace, and one near any other potential danger area.
