The Benefits Of Sound Proofing

Although my neighbors have bothered me for a long time, sound proofing an apartments always seemed like too much work to me. You see, I have limited resources and limited space. Covering my walls with sound proofing installation seemed like a hassle and an impractical solution. Although I didn't like hearing the stomping on my ceiling at all hours of the night, I also didn't want to hire a professional soundproofer. Sound proofing the ceiling would reduce the height by a good 6 inches, and soundproofing the walls would reduce the available floor space. Then my neighbor started to get nasty to me, as if I had been making that loud noises late at night.

You see, I have been a musician for years. I practice the violin – not one of the most obnoxious instruments. It isn't like I am banging on the drums at all hours of night. I simply like to play my violin in the late afternoon and early evening. Apparently, this was too much for my neighbors. The one above me began to bang on the floor every time he would hear me play, and the one next to me called the supervisor on me several times. They didn't seem to mind when someone played loud party music in the middle of the night, but once I started playing my own music they demanded that I sound proof the place.

Although I was unhappy about it, it turned out that sound proofing my apartment was one of the best decisions that I have ever made. You see, I have always wanted to turn my apartment into a recording studio. I have the sound editing equipment, the audio tools on my computer, and even a quality commercial CD burner. Before I soundproofed my apartment, there was no way to record. There was just too much ambient noise, and too many people complaining whenever I made noise of my own. Soundproofing my apartment provided an easy solution. Now I can make as much noise I want, and it doesn't bother anyone.

That isn't to say that sound proofing my place was without drawbacks. For one thing, sound proofing  is incredibly labor intensive. It takes hours and hours to attach sound proof foam to all of the surfaces. For another, it deadens noises and makes the whole room seem strangely silent and still. All in all, however, sound proofing was a good idea.
